Narbonne city in Aude, Languedoc Roussillon, France

Founded by Romans in 118 before JC, Narbonne was the capital of the Province of the Gaule narbonnaise. Located on the Via Domitia, the first Roman road in Gaule, which allowed linking Italy to Spain, it was until the end of the Roman Antiquity one of the most important city of Gaule.

Before this period, Narbonne was a PreRoman oppidum and the Capital of Elisyques, one of the Mediterranean Celtic tribe.
The construction of the Canal du Midi and the presence of the archbishopric mark the pre-revolutionary period. After the Revolution, deprived of the Episcopal presence, Narbonne is not more than a rural sub-prefecture.

From the development of the wine industry towards 1850/1870 and until the emergence of tourism in the 60', Narbonne remains very involved to the crises of the vine growing.
